Shreveport Mill Leads Water Conservation Efforts

The Pratt paper mill in Shreveport, La., is spearheading efforts to help local businesses and residents both conserve water AND protect the environment.

At the request of city leaders, Pratt is testing the viability of using “gray water” – or treated wastewater – to help cool machinery and hydraulic systems at the mill, thereby eliminating the need for freshwater.

At the same time, it will decrease the amount of gray water released into the local catchment system and reduce freshwater costs.

“We’re hopeful this can be a viable solution for us and others to keep costs down as well as do something for the local environment,” said mill manager Ed Kersey.
